stoat Traps

Whether you’re trapping stoats or other mustelids like ferrets and weasels around the backyard, farm, or community, we have a range of humane stoat traps for your situation. Made from heavy-duty, quality components, our stoat traps are easy to use, safe, and efficient.

Our stoat traps are from the DOC series of traps that are widely used in New Zealand. Plus, we have some handy tools to make using these traps safer and easier.

Trapping Tips

Boost your success rate with our stoat, ferret, and weasel trapping tips:

  • Put the trap in the right place – this will depend on the trap you’re using and whether you’re doing urban or bush trapping. But generally:
    • look for any possum sign, e.g. possum droppings; scratches on trees; nibbled citrus, roses, or other shrubs
  • Attach the trap firmly and correctly – look at the instructions for the trap you’re using
  • Attract the possum with a lure/bait – use:
    • apple or other fruit
    • our lure range – either edible or smells
    • (our solid lures attach onto the wire inside the trap)
  • Replace the lure/bait frequently – it won’t attract rodents once it loses its smell.
  • For added attraction, blaze the tree (add a strip of white to the tree to visually attract possums). Use:
    • flour – put a few drops of our concentrated lure in. Wipe a handful of flour up the tree once (don’t wipe more than this or flour starts falling off).
    • our scented lure spray which includes a white blaze – spray it on the tree where you’ve placed the trap. Possums are attracted visually and by smell.

Note: These are general possum trapping tips. Experiences will differ depending on the trap used and the situation – urban, rural, or bush. For more information, see each trap instruction sheet.
